Here’s a classic Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pie recipe — rich, creamy, and perfect for chocolate lovers. This is the kind of pie Grandma would make from scratch with love.


🥧 Old Fashioned Chocolate Pie Recipe

📋 Ingredients:

For the filling:

  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar

  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • 3 large egg yolks

  • 2 cups whole milk

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 2 tablespoons butter

For the crust:

  • 1 pre-baked 9-inch pie crust (homemade or store-bought)

Optional (but traditional):

  • Meringue topping (made from the leftover egg whites) or whipped cream


🥣 Instructions:

1. Prepare the Pie Crust:

If you’re using a store-bought or homemade crust, blind-bake it according to directions and let it cool.

2. Make the Filling:

  1. In a medium saucepan (off heat), whisk together sugar, cocoa powder, flour, and salt.

  2. Add egg yolks and milk. Whisk until smooth.

  3. Place the saucepan over medium heat. Cook the mixture, stirring constantly, until it thickens — about 7–10 minutes. It should be thick like pudding.

  4. Remove from heat. Stir in butter and vanilla extract until smooth.

3. Assemble the Pie:

Pour the hot chocolate filling into the pre-baked pie crust. Smooth the top.

4. Topping (Optional):

For Meringue:

  • Beat the 3 reserved egg whites with ¼ tsp cream of tartar until soft peaks form.

  • Gradually add 6 tablespoons sugar and beat until stiff peaks form.

  • Spread meringue over hot filling, sealing to the edges.

  • Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10–12 minutes until golden brown.

Or:

  • Chill the pie completely and top with whipped cream before serving.


❄️ Chill Time:

  • Let the pie cool at room temperature.

  • Then chill in the refrigerator for at least 3–4 hours (or overnight) until set.


🍽️ Serving:

Slice and serve cold (with or without topping). Classic with coffee or milk!
